The Piper Optimist Club, Kansas City, Kansas is continuing their various programs for still another year. The Piper Optimists sponsor, and their members are actively engaged, in a basketball league for 3rd to 6th grade boys and girls. Organization of the league is underway, with practices and games to begin in January 2011. So far this year, over 170 youths have signed up to participate. Their Fall Volleyball League for 3rd to 6th Grade girls has successfully concluded with over 120 participants.
For the second year (2010), the Club held a Pancake Breakfast, raising over $1000 for the Tyler Jobe Memorial Scholarship Fund. Tyler was a member of the Piper High School Wrestling Program from 1997-2001. Prior to his junior season, he lost part of his leg in an automobile accident. He made it his goal to come back and wrestle his senior year; he did so and with great success. Beyond his wins on the mat, Tyler’s attitude became true inspiration. After high school, Tyler set his sights on becoming a mentor and role model for young athletes facing the challenge of artificial limbs. In the Fall of 2006, Tyler lost his life at the hand of a drunk driver.
The Tyler Jobe Memorial Scholarship was established in his spirit to represent courage, strength, and character. It is awarded annually to a senior wrestler who demonstrates these qualities.
